Monitor Your Reputation & Clean Up Your Digital Dirt

Digital dirt is online content that may negatively impact your personal and professional identity. There are two kinds: Self Created (content you have posted & can be deleted or edited by you) and Posted by Others (request the owner or webmaster of the site to remove the content). Remember, deleting content and setting privacy settings are not absolute. Once on the Internet, content is likely to remain there permanently.

Search and monitor content you've created that's easily viewable by the public and what other people are saying about you and your content. Conduct searches on these websites for yourself, your blog, your Twitter name, screen name/handle, etc.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does this accurately represent me?
  2. Do I feel comfortable having either colleagues or potential employers view this content?
  3. Does it reveal too much personal information that I would be uncomfortable sharing with the public?
